What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a healing modality within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a holistic approach to health developed over thousands of years.
TCM is based on the principle that a vital energy, known as qi ("chee"), flows throughout the body. When health issues arise, it is believed that qi has become imbalanced. The role of an acupuncturist is to restore harmony, promoting healing of both body and mind.
To rebalance qi, an acupuncturist may use a variety of techniques, including fine needles, heat therapy, cupping, and acupressure. Most people experience deep relaxation and a sense of well-being during their sessions.

“I have been visiting Julie for over 17 years, Initially for fertility and my son is now 16 years old. My treatments vary from nerve pain from shingles, a swollen knee, back issues from coughing, general wellbeing, and day to day stresses of life.
I feel amazing when I leave, and I am normally on the road to recovery after two sessions. Julie thank you; you are my go-to and I refer to you as my “magic lady” to all my family and friends.”
Frequently Asked Questions...
Q: What does it feel like?
A: Acupuncture needles are fine, stainless steel needles. They are gently tapped in through a guide tube, and if there is any sensation, it is often described as a tingling or a dull ache. During treatment, patients commonly experience a feeling of heaviness in the limbs and a pleasant sense of relaxation.
The benefits of acupuncture often extend beyond relief from a specific condition. Many people report feeling more relaxed, with an improved mood and an enhanced sense of well-being. For certain conditions, acupuncture is most effective when combined with other TCM techniques, such as heat therapy and acupressure.
Q: What happens in a session?
A: In addition to asking questions about your well-being, I will take your pulse and examine the shape, colour, and coating of your tongue. I will also observe other physical attributes, such as skin colour and posture.
We will discuss your lifestyle and diet, and I may suggest changes to support your treatment. You will then lie down on a padded treatment couch, and I will carry out your treatment based on my diagnosis. At the end of the session, the needles are painlessly removed.
Q: How will I feel after acupuncture?
A: Most people feel relaxed and calm after a session. You may notice an improvement straight away, but as everyone responds differently, changes can also emerge in the following days. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, meaning improvements generally increase and last longer with continued sessions.
Q: What about the needles used?
A: I use pre-sterilised, single-use needles, which are disposed of immediately after treatment. This ensures complete safety and eliminates any risk of infection.
Q: Is it safe?
A: Several studies have shown that acupuncture is one of the safest therapies available in the UK today. In two surveys conducted in 2001, covering 68,000 recorded treatments, only 14 minor side effects—such as mild bruising—were reported, and these effects were temporary.
